The 2008 Cary Visual Art
Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition
   
Guidelines


INTRODUCTION

Sculpture artists from across the nation are invited to participate in the Cary Visual Art Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition. Ten sculptures will be selected for this ten month exhibition. Sculpture sites are located throughout the Cary, N.C. Town Hall campus.

Organized and presented by the non-profit Cary Visual Art organization with the support of the Town of Cary, N.C., this exhibition offers established and emerging artists the opportunity to display their sculptures in our art friendly environment of the Cary Town Hall campus.

Cary Visual Art is dedicated to promote, inspire, encourage and support visual art for uplifting the human spirit in the Cary community.

 

EXHIBITION CRITERIA

  1.

The applicant must be at least 18 years of age and reside in the U.S.

  2.

All entries must be completed prior to submission.

  3.

The selected works are to be exhibited on the Cary Town Hall campus from August 16, 2008 to June 18, 2009. Sculptures are loaned for the time specified above and will not be returned until said period is completed unless prior arrangements have been made with the Cary Visual Art Executive Director.

  4. Work must be suitable for outdoor installation and must:
   
  be structurally secured to a concrete pad with anchor bolts or similar devices or secured to the ground with anchor bolts
  be capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions (high winds, below zero temperatures, heavy rains, ice, snow, storms, etc. )
  be fabricated or finished with non-hazardous materials
  be maintenance free for the duration of the exhibition
  be appropriate for an active pedestrian environment and take into consideration the safety of the audience.
    PLEASE NOTE: Works not following the criteria will not be considered for installation.
     
  5. Installation and de-installation:
   
  Artists are provided a unique opportunity to interact with the surrounding community through a special installation celebration. There will be an opportunity to meet potential buyers at an Artist’s Reception on the evening of August 14, 2008. Sculptors are encouraged to be available to participate in this event and are required to install their sculptures during the dates of August 15 and 16, 2008.
  The artists will be responsible for the delivery of the works to and from the Cary Town Hall Campus and the secure installation of their sculptures.
  Cary Visual Art, Inc. will provide a 4’ x 4’ concrete pad. If the sculpture will not securely fit on a 4’ x 4’ pad or securely anchor to the ground surface, contact the CVA office at 919-531-8149.
  Artists will be responsible for the de-installation and removal of all sculptures during June 18 and 19, 2009.
  Cary Visual Art will supply equipment and volunteers as needed for installations only on Friday, August 15th.
    PLEASE NOTE: Artists unable to meet the scheduled installation requirements are not eligible for participation.
     
  6. The juror’s choice as Best of Show winner of the competition will be announced during the Cary Lazy Day Festival on August 23, 2008.  The juror will review all the works on-site before making the final selection.
     
  7. LIABILITY:  While all reasonable care and precaution will be taken in the handling and assisting in the installation of the sculptures, Cary Visual Art and the Town of Cary will not be responsible for the loss of or damage to any entry, nor liability for the artist.  Cary Visual Art and the Town of Cary will not alter or change the condition of the sculptures during the exhibition in any way except with written instructions from the artist.  If damage to the sculpture occurs, the artist will be notified immediately.  CARY VISUAL ART ADVISES ALL ARTISTS TO INSURE ARTWORK AS CARY VISUAL ART OR THE TOWN OF CARY DOES NOT INSURE THESE OUTDOOR WORKS.  This includes damage to the sculptures and liability for the artist.  Cary Visual Art and the Town of Cary reserve the right to photograph any sculpture for documentation, education and publicity purposes.
     
  8. Participation in the entry process constitutes a full understanding and acceptance of the conditions set forth above.
     
  9. Cary Visual Art, Inc. will assess a 30% commission on sculptures sold during the exhibition.

  Notification of acceptance June 25th, 2008
  Artist’s reception Aug. 14th, 2008
  Install accepted sculptures Aug. 15-16, 2008
  Exhibition closes June 18, 2009
  De-installation of sculptures June 18-19, 2009
